CYCLING IN WEST TEXAS

West Texas is a great place to ride! With our flat terrain and good roads you can ride in any direction with ease. Our moderate temperatures are ideal for year round cycling, and our friendly people make great riding partners.  And we even have MOUNTAINS for the offroad riders. .  The P.B.B.A. maintains MTB trails at the Flag Ranch, near Notrees, TX.  For information on riding these trails, email Danny Zumwalt at deadlgnd5@cs.com .

Check the following  or "" web sites for some great places to ride locally:

Days are getting shorter, but the weather is ideal for riding.  Get out your lighting system and stay on the road!  Take a look at some of the new Cateye LED lighting systems for a simple solution to being seen.  Leg and Arm warmers for those cool early morning rides can also make your ride more pleasant.
West Texas always has wind. Learn to ride with a friend, a rotating draft behind another rider helps that ride into a strong headwind, and remember, you get to ride the tailwind coming back.  Remember to watch the person in front.  Don't overlap a wheel and stay far enough behind to give yourself time to react to any situation.  The front man should also remember to communicate what is going on ahead of him because nobody likes a surprise.
For a fun, easy paced ride, join us at the Golden Corral in Odessa every Sunday morning  for the "Breakfast Ride".  Or for the Racer, join the Tuesday - Thursday riders leaving from Loop 338 and Hwy. 191 in Odessa.   Contact us at Peyton's for ride times.
Bike shops are few and far between out here, so make sure your bicycle is in good mechanical condition. Check for chain wear, frayed cables and bearing adjustment regularly. Everything in West Texas has thorns so always carry a spare tube, patch kit, tire tool, pump, and maybe some spare change for a cool drink and an emergency call home.

Another reason to ride in West Texas is our local cycling club, the Permian Basin Bicycle Association. As a member of the LAB, USCF, NORBA, and TBC, our club hosts rides ranging from road races and tours to mountain bike rides. The Fort Davis Cyclefest, Cactus and Crude MS 150, the Hoffman Triathlon, the Cole Ranch MTB trails, the Coyote Classic MTB race and weekly training rides are all supported by the P.B.B.A
