It is time to climb! Welcome to Hammerfest 2008, a Texas Cup Division 1 Race – Come race one of the most challenging stage race courses in the Southwest – come race the “Texas Alps”!    It will be held in three stages. Stage one will begin in scenic Ft. Davis, Texas on Saturday Morning, April 12th    a 16 mile out & back time trial on “flat” straight roads. Stage two, on Saturday Afternoon, will start the climbing with a short, intense road stage. There are 10 miles to warm up, THEN 6 miles of real climbing (up to 17% grades) – enjoy!!! We will start in Fort Davis on Hwy 118 and climb our way to the top of Mt. Locke - location of McDonald Observatory.  Stage three on Sunday morning, April 13th , will start at the Prude Ranch and wind through the mountains of the Scenic Loop. The altitude goes from 5000' to over 6500' and climbs are steep and numerous. The 74 mile route will have a neutral start through Ft. Davis then race around the loop to “Heartbreak Hill”.  The 34 mile route will be an out and back from the Prude Ranch to Madera Canyon and back to “Heartbreak Hill” (a lot of climbing). The 16 mile race will start in Madera Canyon and race to “Heartbreak Hill”.  And the 56 mile route will race from the “Point of Rocks” around the remainder of the loop and finish at “Heartbreak Hill”.

*Start times are by race category and will be awarded by order of registration within the category.  Start times will be posted Friday evening, after registration closes, at Prude Ranch and at the Hotel Limpia.  **Field limit of 100 racers in all categories except Men’s Cat 5 and Women’s Cat 4 which are limited to 50 racers and Masters limited to 75 Riders.

 

Prizes - $6500.00 in cash prizes plus Trophies will be awarded on Sunday, immediately after the finish of the last road racer, to the individual racers with the fastest combined times (GC) for the three stages.  We will also have drawings for merchandise door prizes, so stick around.

Rules - All USA Cycling Rules and Regulations apply at all times.  USA Cycling approved helmets must be worn at all times while on a bike, on or off the course.  The center line rule will be STRICTLY enforced, with anyone crossing the center line being subject to disqualification.  Restricted gear rule for all Junior racers.  There will be NO drafting in the Time Trial.  Racers must complete each stage in order to be eligible to race in the next stage. Please deposit litter – bottles, wrappers, etc. – at feed zone.  All rules are covered in detail in the  USA CYCLING Rulebook.

Support - Limited neutral wheel support will be available from the official's vehicles.  Junior racers will be wheels in – wheels out. No mechanic will be available, but we can sag you in.  Other support vehicles will not be allowed on the course.  Neutral feed zones will be provided and their locations will be identified the day of the event.  No handups or feeds will be permitted outside these zones. 
Registration – Must present valid USA Cycling License at registration.  One day ($
10.00 per day) and full USA Cycling license forms will be available.  Fees listed above for those pre-registering (registration postmarked by April 9, 2008) - $10.00 late fee if postmarked after April 9, 2008.  Fee includes $2.00 USA CYCLING Insurance Fee and $1.50 donation to TXBRA.  Please send your COMPLETED USA CYCLING Standard Athlete Release Form along with a check or money order to:

Race day registration and packet pickup will be at the Prude Ranch Office on Friday, April 20th from 4:00 PM until 9:00 PM. Packets only for pre-registered may be picked up until 10:00 PM or 6:00 – 7:00 AM Saturday morning.  NO Saturday registration.
