Son loves his "Super Red racer"

Pros:
Stable, Easy to Grow Into, Smooth Ride, Highly Adjustable
Cons:
Best Uses:
First Learning, Light Trails, Street Riding
Our son started riding a pedal bike when he turned three. No training wheels!!! We can thank his balance bike for that. A family friend offered their son's "first bike" to our son. He rode it for a summer but the 12" wheels created more work when pedaling and the weight of the bike itself was too much. We finally found a bike that would work in the 16" Trek Jet. Our son, now 4 years old, loves it and took off like a pro the second he sat on it. Again... NO TRAINING WHEELS required. We look forward to using this for all of our kids. He calls it his super red racer.

Best 16" bike for a 4 year old!

Pros:
Stable, Easy to Grow Into, Highly Adjustable, Built to Last, Smooth Ride
Cons:
Heavy
Best Uses:
I bought this for my 4 year old and he has ridden it many times and it is a huge step up from the ordinary "big box" store bikes that sell for a lot less. I would say it is worth the money and I can easily see my son taking the training wheels off very soon due to how well this bike was made. He feels very comfortable on it. Only draw back on it is the weight which is typical for this kind of kids bike so it is not a disadvantage compared to the rest of the market, just something I wish they would change for little kids bikes as an industry.

Good Looking and Well Built - But Heavy

Pros:
Smooth Ride, Stable, Built to Last
Cons:
Heavy
Best Uses:
Street Riding, First Learning
Kid loves riding it and does so constantly. His first two-wheeled bike was a wooden balance bike, so I expect it won't be long before the trainers come off. He appeared to be very confident from first ride and learned the foot brakes very quickly. It appears to be easily maneuverable, despite its weight. However, my son appears to struggle to get up even the slightest of grades. I had to carry the bike uphill and through the city streets to get to my car - trust me, it's heavy. Otherwise, it is a very good investment so far.

can ride off road

Pros:
Highly Adjustable, Stable, Built to Last
Cons:
Chain Falls Off Alot
Best Uses:
Bumpy Driveway, Dirt, First Learning
highly adjustable training wheels make it possibe for my 5 yr. old boy to ride on our bumpy dirt and rock driveway. chain slips off easily which is quickly becoming a hassle. overall a well built investment. This bike might aviod the growing pile of junk bikes my 3 kids have created over the years.

Love this bike!!

Pros:
Stable, Smooth Ride, Easy to Grow Into, Highly Adjustable, Built to Last
Cons:
Best Uses:
First Learning
This is my son's first 2 wheeler (he's 4), this is the first 2 wheeler he has been able to pedal with ease and we have tried a lot of bikes. Because of the extra weight it is more stable and he feels safe. Just to note my son has an eye condition that effects his depth perception and he is not very coordinated and has bad balance so if my kid can ride this bike anyone can :)

Great starter bike!

Pros:
Built to Last, Stable
Cons:
Best Uses:
First Learning
This bike is being ridden by my two year old son who outgrew another brand of bike. The Jet 16 is well-made, sturdy, and can take the abuse of smaller children. My son zips around the neighborhood on this thing like he is an old cycling pro. Some say the bike is heavy, but you have to consider the riding audience which are small kids who would likely destroy lighter materials. If my two year old can ride this Jet 16 with no problem, yours can too! This is a good bike!

Heavy and difficult to pedal

Pros:
Built to Last, Smooth Ride
Cons:
Quickly Outgrown, Wears Quickly, Heavy
Best Uses:
First Learning
Like a lot of the other reviews say, this bike is so heavy. As a result, I think it makes it difficult to pedal up even slight inclines. My son learned to ride on this bike, so it served its purpose, but it's just an average quality bike - not worth the price premium. Now he's riding it faster, and he has to pedal it so fast to just ride at an average speed. I'm guessing Trek put a small sprocket on it to compensate for the massive weight. Also, the grips wore out rather quickly and had to be replaced. And not on the ends from being laid down, in the middles where your hand rests. I'm pretty surprised that the grip quality is so low.

Great if you like sherman tanks

Pros:
Stable, Smooth Ride, Built to Last
Cons:
Heavy
Best Uses:
Light Trails, First Learning
This is a good bike. It works well. The problem is that it weighs more than my 56cm road bike with 20 speeds. This thing is a tank. I'd be glad to pay more to get less, if you know what I mean. Another issue is the crank length, I'd make them a little longer for more uphill leverage. Please consider making "nicer" children's bikes. I'm about to go out and buy a tig welder and a bike jig and make my own. Try and ride this thing up a hill. Well, I have--kind of. I just have to push my kid. He can't go up the slightest incline and he's a good rider with strong legs.

graduated from Jet 12, smooth transition

Pros:
Stable, Smooth Ride, Easy to Grow Into, Built to Last
Cons:
Best Uses:
First Learning, Light Trails, Street Riding
This is our second bike in the Jet series as my son moved up from his Jet 12, which is now finding new life with my youngest son. These bikes are bomb proof, my kids take these on light single track, little jumps, trips to the park, camping etc etc. If Trek ever needed a pilot group to test its durability look our way, these bikes have held up! Yes these bikes are a little on the husky side but that is for good reason and by design, they maintain the riders centre of gravity. I've seen my kids rip on light weight Canadian Tire specials and you see why Trek built these on the heavy side, the cheap bikes get thrown everywhere, steering and control especially on bumpy sections are all over, the Treks weight keeps them centred and controlled. At times you do wish there was another gear as the kids look like they're rockin a spin class, but on the other hand do you want to be fussing with gears on a 4 yr olds bike...nah. If you want a solid qulaity bike for your kid then this is a bike you should look at. The price might turn some people away and that s too bad, but I am sure Trek parents who've spent some dough on their own bikes appreciate and understand why the cost is a little more. Happy riding everyone!

Good quality but not for good riders

Pros:
Smooth Ride, Stable, Built to Last
Cons:
Sprocket too small
Best Uses:
First Learning
Great learner but once the trainers come off, my son is peddling 3x as fast for half the speed. He's faster on his 12" that has slightly larger sprocket. It's almost dangerous as he pedals so fast. Called Trek and few options. He won't be able to use it longer. Would love to hear options as it wasn't cheap.

Solid build, but too heavy.

Pros:
Easy to Grow Into, Built to Last, Highly Adjustable
Cons:
Heavy
Best Uses:
Street Riding, First Learning
We bought this bike for our 3 yr old son to replace a cheap bike we had gotten him before. This bike is a lot better build. Seems very solid and will take the beating my son is prepared to deliver on it. My main concern at this point is the weight. This thing weighs more than my full size mountain bike. If he falls over and it lands on him, he is stuck, he can't even get out from under it. This bike is just on the edge of being to big for him at this time but expect by summers end it will fit him better, but I still can't get over the weight. It's unreal for how small the bike is. I will say that everything else about the bike gleams with quality constuction. Gearing is smooth, guards are funtional and well placed, I think it will be a great bike for him for many years to come. The upside to the weight is that he will have some monster quads by the summers end. I would recommend this bike, but only after warning them about the weight. Our intent was to get him a bike that he could navigate up hills better. Although the stroke and tires of this bike are better, the weight is counter productive, and I find that he needs more help now than before.

great first time bike

Pros:
Easy to Grow Into, Stable, Low center bar
Cons:
Best Uses:
Street Riding, First Learning
Our just turned 6 year needed a larger bike. He was still using training wheels on his 14 inch bike. It was a very heavy bike a was hard for him to keep stable without the TWs. We got the Jet 16 and he was doing large circles, stopping and starting after 1 morning on this bike. He loves it! Says it makes him go really fast!

Nice..but heavy

Pros:
Quality, Easy to Grow Into, "Touch Points", Styling
Cons:
Grips, Heavy
Best Uses:
First Learning
I love bicylces and wanted to purchase a top quality bike for my son to learn on. The Jet was the one my son wanted....bad! The cool factor was definitly high and he loved it. I only have two complaints (1) the grips (now fixed on the newer models) wore off the ends quickly from being placed on its side. The new grips I saw recently were much beefier and should solve this. (2) The bike is HEAVY. I mean it's heavy even for a steel bike. The first year he had it he couldn't pick it up. and it was difficult to get going for a little guy. As he progressed to age 6 this was less of a problem and he is still riding it as a young 7 year old. With all this, I still think its a great bike, just wish it came in aluminum. Then it would be the killer bike to beat.

Great idea but to heavy!

Pros:
Built to Last, Easy to Grow Into
Cons:
Heavy
Best Uses:
Big Kids
We own this bike for my son who is very fast on his wood bike. He has not been willing to ride this bike because of the weight it is way to heavy for him. He has trouble picking it up to get on it. We did take the pedals off so that it was similar to his wood balance bike, but the heavy weight of the bike is a huge problem

Overall good bike, but very heavy.

Pros:
Highly Adjustable, Easy to Grow Into
Cons:
Heavy
Best Uses:
We bought this for my 4 year old son after he graduated from a 12" balance bike and 12" pedal bike. This bike was easy to fit to him, and has been very adjustable as he has grown since. He was able to ride this without training wheels almost immediately. The only drawback is this bike's weight--it is extemely heavy for its size, and in relation to the size/weight of the rider. This makes it hard for him to pick it up and move it around. If I had to do it again, I would find a similar but lighter bike from another manufacturer, for this reason only.

You get what you pay for

Pros:
Quality Design
Cons:
Heavy
Best Uses:
First Learning
This is the best quality 16" bike that we found for our 4 yr old who has been sans training wheels for 7 months. Since our son loves riding, we figured it was worth the extra $. We really liked the padded and low top tube. The goose neck is also robust as is the rest of the hardware on this great looking bike.
